Welcome to my first official post on The Couples Blog. I think it is only fair that you get to know me a little bit as you follow along our journey. You can check out my wife’s intro post here. Read along 21 questions we have answered to get to know Dalton and Brittany from The Couples Blog.
1. What is one thing that you are proud of?
I would have to say that it takes a lot for me to give up, except when I am watching sports. If I am watching my favourite team getting obliterated in the final minutes of the game, I won’t bother watching the rest. But when it comes to difficult tasks or going through a challenging time, I often find a way to push through. I am proud to say that I won’t back down from a challenge as I believe it can pose an opportunity for growth.
2. What is one thing that you fear?
I fear disappointing others. The word ‘disappointed’ alone scares me, but the thought of letting someone down cuts deep.
3. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
I decided to challenge myself on this one by picking a location outside of North America. My knowledge about Australia’s cultures and lifestyles is limited but I am quite interested in based on my general analysis. I have never been to Australia so this is subject to change. But hear me out on this one… With me being an analytical person, I did some research with the help of Numbeo, Holiday-Weather and World Happiness Report.
As a reference, I am using stats of Toronto’s living conditions considering we live on the outskirts of the city. Some highlights include safety, health care, pollution and climate indices being in favour of Brisbane. Additionally, Brisbane will typically have more hours of sunshine throughout the year and with that, more consistent temperatures. According to the World Happiness Report of 2019, Canada is ranked #9 whereas Australia is close at #11. I expect my overall lifestyle to be relatively similar but living conditions (financial and non-financial) seem to be an upgrade if we were to move to Brisbane.
I’m curious to know where you would like to live if you could pick anywhere on Earth. Feel free to leave a comment below or reach out to us directly via our contact page.
4. What’s one thing you’re super passionate about?
Technology… I think tech can help improve our way of living. Whether by increasing efficiency or gaining access to valuable information within seconds, technology is definitely something that intrigues me.
5. If you could rewrite your past, what’s one thing you’d change?
I would have gone to school for an IT-related program. I graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce which has definitely helped me get to where I am today, professionally and personally. With a true passion for technology, I can only imagine what I could have accomplished over the last few years.
6. What do you think your best physical feature is?
My hazel eyes… Eye contact is probably the first thing to happen when you meet someone, which is likely the reason I have been told I have ‘nice’ eyes.
7. When you’re feeling down, who or what is your biggest go-to person or activity?
Aside from speaking to my wife, my go-to is typically video games. I find video games allow me to escape from reality for a bit, which in turn lets me shake off whatever is bothering me. Whether it is an RPG such as the Final Fantasy series or sports titles, they all seem to work the same way.
8. If you had to lose one of your five senses, which would you give up and why?
If I had to choose, I would say my sense of smell. Losing my eyesight or hearing capabilities would make me feel like I am missing a lot of experiences such as the complete ability to watch movies, listen to music or even be attentive to my family on a daily basis. Also, I love to eat anything from medium-rare steak to a fully loaded pizza, losing my ability to taste would defeat the purpose of eating quality foods. Lastly, if I lost my sense of touch, I wouldn’t be able to communicate or understand dangerous situations such as touching something hot.
9. Where’s the coolest place you’ve ever been/travelled to?
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. I learned a lot about the culture and how people live different lifestyles outside of our country. Punta Cana was the ‘coolest’ experience not just for the soft sanded beaches and luxurious resorts, but to see first hand the amount of passion and work ethic they put into their day-to-day lives. Working 12+ hour days while receiving what many would consider minimal pay, you have to admire the fact that they always keep a smile on their faces. Our trip to Punta Cana made us realize that we are quite privileged and should be more thankful for the things we have access to.
10. If someone gave you a million dollars right now, what would you spend it on?
Well, let’s break it down… Firstly, I would pay off all of our outstanding debt including student, vehicle and wedding loans. Next, I would maximize our TFSA contribution room to capitalize on a tax-free shelter for investments. Along with the TFSA’s, I would put additional funds away into savings/investments to cover about 5 years’ worth of income. Finally, the rest would go towards a down payment on our first home or a rental property to increase our income sources.
11. What’s your favourite thing to do on the weekends?
Absolutely nothing important! Working a 9-to-5 job, Monday through Friday makes me want to chill out on the weekend. It’s an opportunity to catch up on sleep and mentally relax.
12. What’s your zodiac sign? And do you think it describes you?
I find that everyone has their own opinions/beliefs on what each zodiac sign represents, so here is my take… As a Pisces, you can find me dreaming big whether on personal goals or even in our slumber. When emotions kick in (positive or negative), they often persuade our decisions and actions. Pisces are loyal individuals who look for someone who can share the same aspirations. Family, friendship and unison between both are highly valued.
13. What scares you the most about the future?
Uncertainty of everything. Environment, economy, health, etc. It’s a scary thought that anything can significantly change in a matter of seconds.
14. What’s your favourite flavour of ice cream?
If it has peanut butter, I am a happy camper! Rocky Road, Reese’s and Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter Half Baked are all good for me!
15. Are you a competitive person?
Extremely… A game of cards or the championship game is all considered just as competitive for me. I will always strive for first no matter what the reward is.
16. What’s the movie scene you loved the most?
I have to pick a scene from my all-time favourite movie which is ‘Invincible’ featuring Mark Wahlberg and crew. The movie is centred around my favourite NFL team (Philadelphia Eagles) during the ’70s. Towards the end of the movie, Vince Papale calls an audible to ultimately change the outcome of the game. Of course, I don’t want to give too many details to avoid spoilers so you will have to go watch it if you haven’t already! Why that scene is my favourite is that it taught me that everyone is capable of achieving anything.
17. Are you a morning person or night person?
I hate mornings, period.
18. What’s your all-time favourite memory?
Our wedding day, by a mile and a half. We put so much effort into planning the day and to see it all come together was very rewarding. We were honoured to have many of our friends and family there to celebrate our special day.
19. What was the last thing to make you cry?
Seeing my future wife walk down the aisle during our wedding ceremony. Tried my best to hold back the emotions, but couldn’t help it!
20. Are you more of a summer or winter kind of person?
It takes a lot for me to feel cold, so winter I can certainly bear through. But I enjoy summertime for the additional hours of sunshine and comfort of walking outside without having to wear 3 layers of clothing.
21. What would your dream vacation consist of if money wasn’t a factor?
Anyone heard of Bora Bora? Bright blue waters, soft white sands and huts on the water… Sounds like paradise to me!
