Happy Thursday everyone! I hope everyone in Canada is staying warm these days. This week brought the first snowfall to our area and it immediately got me in the holiday spirit. Dalton and I are planning on decorating for Christmas this weekend and I am very excited. So, naturally, this sparked an idea for a blog post. I wanted to share some of our favourite holiday activities so you guys can enjoy them as well. Of course as with everything this year please partake in social distancing and Covid-19 protocols while enjoying these activities.
1. Decorate Your Home
Nothing gets you into the Christmas spirit like getting out all of your décors. I also love to buy just a few new items to add to my collection each year.
2. Buy an Elf on the Shelf
Elf on the shelf has become a beloved tradition for many who have small children. Dalton and I do not have children yet but I think this is such a fun holiday activity to enjoy and be creative with. Here are some great ideas for your elf on the shelf.
3. Visit a Christmas Market
Every year I try to get to one of the many Christmas markets in our area. I love visiting the vendors, seeing the beautiful lights and trying all the holiday treats. I know it will be a little more difficult to enjoy this beloved tradition. Just remember to keep your distance and be safe
4. Buy Matching Pjs for the Family
I always opened Christmas pj’s on Christmas Eve as a kid and I am hoping to continue this tradition.
5. Send Christmas Cards
Buy or make Christmas cards and send them to all of your family and friends. I find that sending Christmas cards has started to die out but perhaps with the state of the world, we can bring this tradition back. Unfortunately, this holiday season will be a little different but sending kind words to loved ones can make all the difference around the holidays.
6. Make your own Advent Calendar
We usually buy a cheap advent calendar from the grocery store. However, I think taking the time to put together your own would be so fun. Make one for your significant other and then swap. A special little gift every day of December sounds like a perfect holiday season!
7. Find and Cut Down a Christmas Tree
As a child my family always got a real Christmas tree. We would hike out to the forest and cut down a big beautiful tree. In later years we stopped this tradition and ended up getting a fake tree. Whatever your preference is get a Christmas tree and decorate!
8. Make a Centrepiece for Christmas Dinner
Have some girlfriends over for a glass of wine on a Sunday afternoon and make some beautiful centrepieces for your Christmas festivities. Check out this link to some great inspiration!
9. Go Tobogganing
The only good thing about the snow is it brings with it all kinds of fun outdoor activities. No matter what age tobogganing is so much fun! Grab some friends and head to the hill for an afternoon of fun. This is a perfect activity this year as you can keep distance and remain safe.
10. Donate Food to the Food Bank
The holiday season can bring a lot of joy but it can also bring a lot of stress. So, this holiday season please try to give back in any way you can!
“Christmas is most truly Christmas when we celebrate it by giving the light of love to those who need it most.”
– Ruth Carter Stapleton
11. Donate Toys to a Christmas
The holiday season is all about giving, so try to give back to a child who may not have the best Christmas otherwise! There are all kinds of donation boxes or you can bring your donations right to a police station.
12. Buy a Christmas Ornament to Commemorate the Year
Another one of my favourite Christmas traditions is picking out an ornament that really encompasses our year. Every year I look back at all the ornaments and remember all the wonderful times we’ve had.
13. Christmas Movie Marathon
Is it even the holiday season if you don’t have a Christmas movie marathon? Not in my house! Christmas movies are a staple at our house, every weekend in December is filled with Christmas movies. So, naturally, I will be coming out with a Christmas movie binge list on the blog check back soon!
14. Make a Fun Christmas Cocktail
Every year I scour the internet for a fun new Christmas cocktail recipe. It is so much fun to play around and custom craft a new beverage for the holidays. Here are some of my favourites that I have tried in the past.
15. Bake Christmas Treats
I am no pro baker over here or anything, but I do enjoy getting in the kitchen and putting together some EASY Christmas treats. Some of our favourites are Christmas bark, peanut butter balls and anything with candy canes!
16. Go on a Walk to Admire the Christmas Lights
I love doing this on Christmas Eve after dinner. Walking through our neighbourhood with a hot cup of cocoa just taking in all the lights. You can also make this into a nice drive.
17. Build a Gingerbread House
Whether you make it from scratch or buy a kit it is such a fun activity to do together. Get the family together and make it a competition who can make the prettiest gingerbread house!
18. Make a Christmas Playlist of Your Favourite Tunes
Is there anything better than all of your Christmas favourites in one place? NO! Get a head start on your Christmas playlist, save it in Spotify and keep it forever or add some new ones to your playlist from last year.
19. Go Black Friday Shopping
Everyone loves a deal, right? Get online and get your shopping done especially with Black Friday right around the corner. Dalton and I are going to make it easier on you this year with our 2020 Christmas gift guides for him and her coming out next week. Daltons will be coming out on Sunday and mine to follow on Thursday.
20. Take a Christmas Portrait With Family
A portrait to commemorate the year is perfect. It also is a great cheap gift option to get the photo framed. Hint: grandma and grandpa love gifts like this!
21. Do a Random Act of Kindness
I try to do a random act of kindness at least once a week but especially around the holidays. It is easy to get wrapped up in the stress, depression and anxiety that surrounds Christmas. Try to brighten someone’s day by buying their coffee or helping a neighbour shovel their driveway. It truly is the little things in life so look out for others and lend a hand where you can.
22. Get a Head Start on Your New Year Resolutions and Goals
As many of you know if you have been following our journey since the beginning I am a goal junkie. I love setting and achieving my goals. Check out my goal setting post from last year and get ready for a brand new one coming very soon.
23. Do a Secret Santa Gift Exchange With Friends
It may be harder this year to get together and spend time with friends. So, do a secret Santa and send their gift to them. Plan a facetime date with all of you and open your gifts together. A little different than normal but creative and still so much fun. Throw in a glass of wine and you’ve got yourself a party!
24. Read the Night Before Christmas
25. Be Nice … Santa Is Watching!
Those are things Dalton and I will be doing over the next month to prepare and celebrate Christmas. If we missed some of your favourite activities please share below in the comments. We are always in the market for a new, fun way to celebrate! I know it won’t be the same Christmas we are all used to but we will still try to make it the best it can be. At the end of the day, it is all about who you spend it with so spending time with family and friends (SAFELY). That is all for me this week, stay tuned for more holiday-themed posts coming your way! Everyone, please stay happy, healthy and safe.
