As many of you are being asked by your boss to book your vacation time in, I thought I would give you some ideas of where you can go. If you are anything like me, I never know when to book my vacation so early in the year. I may not have any trips planned but I am also thinking what if I need an extra week some other time? Well have no fear, my list of best places to travel in every month of 2020 is here!
If you want to see more travel posts, bookmark this page. I will be posting more of my best places to travel in every month of 2020, focusing on individual countries.
Best Place to Travel in January - Aspen, Colorado
If you enjoy skiing or snowboarding, then you will want to visit Aspen, Colorado in January. With lodging getting a little cheaper after the holidays and snow covering the slopes, it’s hard to pass that up. Colorado is known to have some of the best slopes in the world, take advantage of the discounts while you can!
Bonus: ESPN Winter X Games are held in January, so book your trip around then for more stuff to do.
Best Place to Travel in February - Venice, Italy
Residents of Venice host some of the best festivities throughout the month of February, known as the Venice Carnival. You can enjoy spectacular performances and admire creative costumes.
Bonus: Although Venice will experience cooler weather (typically around 5°C in February), they get little to no snow. So if you hate that white stuff, you should be able to avoid it in Venice.
Best Place to Travel in March - New Orleans, Louisiana
Although you might miss out on Mardi Gras celebrations, New Orleans in March is still full of excitement but without the overwhelming crowds. With the weather averaging about 18°C, you can comfortably enjoy events such as the Irish Channel Parade or Super Sunday.
Bonus: To save a few bucks during a busy time, take advantage of the New Orleans Pass to gain access to several attractions at a discount.
Best Place to Travel in April - Tokyo, Japan
Don’t forget the camera! Tokyo in April is astonishing due to the cherry blossoms that flourish at this time. These trees have become an essential part of the Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival). If you love strawberries, then make sure to visit a strawberry buffet. Several restaurants and hotels will display creative dishes with their in-season strawberries.
Bonus: Visiting the cherry blossoms during the day and night will give you some great shots to take home.
Best Place to Travel in May - Cusco, Peru
Cusco’s dry season begins in May, minimizing chances of rain. With Machu Picchu being one of the world’s most infamous attractions, there is a daily limit of 2,500 to enter the site. The busiest time to experience Machu Picchu is in July and August, so going in May will reduce the concerns of the visitor limits.
Bonus: Try to get to Machu Picchu for the early morning or mid-afternoons as the busiest times are typically between 11 am and 3 pm.
Best Place to Travel in June - Reykjavik, Iceland
Unfortunately, you will miss the Northern Lights in June, but at least there is another phenomenon to experience. As June starts the summer months in Iceland, this will be the best time to enjoy the Midnight Sun. Who wouldn’t like almost 24 hours of sunlight? Make sure you are in Iceland for June 21 as this is typically the summer solstice, giving you the peak of the Midnight Sun.
Bonus: Iceland has the largest population of puffins and can only be seen between May and August. Take advantage of this while you can!
Best Place to Travel in July - Athens, Greece
July is the hottest month (along with August) in Greece. Coming in at an average of 29°C, this is the time to enjoy the beaches! Don’t forget to visit the Acropolis Museum to learn about Greek history and culture.
Bonus: July hosts two significant music festivals: Nafplio Festival (early July) and Olympus Festival (late July), go check them out!
Best Place to Travel in September - Grand Canyon, Arizona
The Grand Canyon is a place close to my heart as this is where I proposed to Brit. I could argue journeying the Grand Canyon any month, September is a great time as won’t be crazy busy. With the desert heat, North American winter months will attract more tourists. Students will be returning to school in September, which means fewer family trips. Take advantage of a slower time to enjoy a romantic stroll along Desert View Drive.
Bonus: National Public Lands Day is celebrated on the fourth Saturday of September. This day is free to enter the Grand Canyon!
Best Place to Travel in October - Munich, Germany
Do I even need to explain why you need to visit Germany in October? Well if I must, it is Oktoberfest of course! But be aware that Oktoberfest actually starts in late-September and ends early-October.
Bonus: Munich may have a lot of shops to check out, keep note that Sundays are off limits! This includes the supermarkets as well. No shopping on Sundays!
Best Place to Travel in November - Maui, Hawaii
With consistent temperatures throughout the year, you can really visit Hawaii in any month. However, November will give you cheaper hotel fees just before the winter months hit. With students in the thick of the school year, the family vacation season is also at a low during this time.
Bonus: For the coffee fiends out there, you will have the opportunity to experience the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival for 10 days. Soak in the history of the infamous Kona coffee.
Best Place to Travel in December - Tasmania, Australia
For the final month of the year, check out Tasmania, Australia. For North Americans, December is the start of Winter. Meanwhile, in Australia, Summertime is just getting started! With daily highs coming in at 20°C and rain at its lowest levels, you will have many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.
Bonus: Tasmanian Devil population has been declining due to a cancer epidemic and is considered to be an endangered species. You can find a few wildlife centres in Tasmania which I recommend you visit to see these small bear-looking marsupials. Here are some locations to check out:
