With our participation in Movember coming to a close on November 30, 2020, I want to spread awareness around mental health. More specifically, how to improve mental health naturally. Trying to find the best ways to improve mental health can often feel overwhelming. There are just as many ways to go about it as there are different reasons for having problems with mental health. Different people have different reasons, but some of the most common reasons are stress, depression, and anxiety. It can also be caused by an illness.
One thing I want to be clear on is I am by no means an expert or educated in this area. However, I am sharing some of the things I try to implement myself when feeling anxious or stressed.
How mental health can impact your life
Differentiating between symptoms of depression and unhealthy mental condition is not always so cut and dried. If someone is mentally ill, it often has a negative effect on their ability to function, have meaningful friendships, and meet their day-to-day responsibilities. When you experience depression or anxiety, you may find you struggle with work, school, and/or relationships.
Physical ailments such as cancer can have similar effects on a person’s mental well being. Because the mind and body are so intertwined, when one aspect is affected, the other will suffer as well. This is true for many aspects of life, but mental illnesses are more difficult to treat because of the way the mind and body work together.
Get a professional opinion via your doctor
In addition, if you think you may have some of the above symptoms of mental illness, then you need to talk with your doctor about what to look for and how to go about treating them. This is where your doctor may prescribe medication. Your doctor will have your complete history, including your personal history of depression or other illnesses before they determine whether they should prescribe medication or recommend other alternatives.
Of course, natural cures are also an option. You may have heard about herbs or homeopathic cures for depression and anxiety. There is no evidence that these options have any real-world impact, but many people swear by them.
Leverage your friends and family for emotional support
Many people have been able to overcome mental illnesses with natural remedies that are available to them. These remedies can be very effective, especially if you have a strong support system. Your family and friends can be your greatest allies in fighting back against the mental illnesses you may be dealing with.
It is also important to have emotional support. Leverage your loved ones such as a spouse, partner, parents, siblings or even your friends. Emotional support can make a big difference in seeing the positivity in life and encourage you to power through.
Communicate your experiences
Talking about the problems that you are having in your relationships, work-life, or hobbies is also important when it comes to improving your mental health. If you feel lonely or isolated, then you may need to take steps to change the way you view things. If your friends aren’t supportive, talk to your family.
Finally, you will also want to remember that having a positive attitude is extremely important to your overall health. Keep in mind that if you are happy, you will have more energy.
